Dental Sealants for your Child

Dental Sealants for your Child

May 30, 2019 | Posted by Hines Little Smiles | Uncategorized | 0 comments |

Unfortunately, most children are prone to cavities and tooth decay. As a leading provider of pediatric dentistry in Columbus, we’ve seen the numbers of children with cavities rising year after year. It’s a serious issue, and you can’t ignore it.

Thankfully, there are ways to prevent cavities in the first place. At Hines Little Smiles, we provide dental sealants for children. If you don’t know what these are or how they help, then allow us to explain.

What is a dental sealant?

A dental sealant is essentially a thin coating that’s placed on your child’s teeth. It bonds to the surface of the tooth, and you can only see them if you go right up close and peer in their mouth. Dental sealants don’t impact their ability to chew food – they’re only there for protective purposes.

It’s a completely painless process as well; there’s no need for invasive treatments or any anesthetic. All that’s required is a quick clean of the teeth from a dental hygienist, then a solution is applied to help the sealant attach and bond quicker. After that, the sealant itself get’s brushed onto the teeth, and a light is used to harden it. The whole appointment takes a few minutes, and your child will be pain-free.

How does your child benefit from dental sealants?

Dental sealants aim to prevent any food or bacteria getting stuck in the grooves of your child’s teeth, which leads to plaque build-up. By stopping this from happening, you prevent cavities and tooth decay from occurring. They last up to 10 years, and are the best way to stop cavities and tooth decay in children – along with good oral hygiene practices as well!

When tooth decay sets in, you can’t stop it. Your child will need fillings – or worse. If they want to avoid these treatments, then it’s a great idea to get dental sealants!

Does your child need dental sealants?

Seeing as the rate of children suffering from tooth decay keeps on rising, we highly recommend that every child gets dental sealants. It’s a quick appointment, it’s covered by the majority of insurance packages; there are no downsides to it.

As soon as your child starts getting their permanent molars and premolars, then they’re an ideal candidate for dental sealants. During this period, they’re most likely to suffer from cavities and tooth decay. Protect them with the sealant, and you can save them from oral health issues as they grow older.

If we notice your child has baby teeth with a few deep grooves, then it can help to get some sealant on them as well. This is just for added protection as teeth with grooves can get cavities quite easily. If a baby tooth falls out too early, then it can impact the adult tooth eruption as well.
